A conductor of opera as well as symphonic repertoire, numerous performances and guest appearances with, for example, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Symphony Orchestra Basel, the Norske Opera in Oslo, the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège characterize his conducting endeavours. In the field of opera, he has dedicated himself to the performance of unknown operas by Rossini, Bellini and Verdi. As a lieder accompanist and chamber musician, Jan Schultsz, together with musical partners such as Cecilia Bartoli, Werner Güra, Marina Viotti, Daniel Behle and Leila Schayegh, uses inquisitive interpretative approaches to embrace new and well-known repertoire as his own. With recordings such as the complete piano chamber music of the Swiss composers J. J. Raffs and Hans Hubers, he continually rediscovers works of the classical-romantic era that are unknown today. Numerous award-winning CD recordings are testament to the way he approaches well-known pieces in the repertoire, questioning customary listening and performance traditions.
